Central

Central is part of the Midwest Macro, together with Wales & West and Westcountry. The Central region is also divided into three micro regions: Central South, Central East and Central West. Five key facts about the region

  • The Central area covers 25% of the land mass of England
  • Although the region is the industrial epicentre of England, with bustling cities such as Birmingham, Nottingham and Leicester, it also includes the idyllic countryside of the Cotswolds, the ancient university city of Oxford and historic towns such as Shrewsbury, Hereford, Warwick and Stamford.
  • At the heart of the region, Birmingham is a vibrant and multicultural modern city. The £500m Bullring shopping centre includes a futuristic Selfridges store and the first of Debenhams’ new concept stores.
  • Central is the highest TV region for car ownership: 22% of households own more than one car, compared to London’s 19%.
  • It has the highest cultural participation rate in the country, with an annual average of 12 visits per head to museums, historical buildings, galleries and theatres.
