Five key facts about the region

• The Westcountry region covers Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and West Dorset. It includes rolling countryside and wild moorland, while the dramatic coastlines and idyllic beaches attract hoards of tourists every summer.
• The region’s fortunes have always been strongly tied to the sea, from the naval port of Plymouth to the numerous fishing villages
• Much of Plymouth was destroyed in the Second World War, but it has been rebuilt to become a major retail centre for the area, as well as a significant port and naval base
• Leisure is a major contributor to the region’s economy. As well as attracting walkers and cyclists, Cornwall is the centre of the UK’s surfing scene.
• The Eden Project, near St Austell in Cornwall, is the fourth most visited attraction in the UK, with 1.25m visitors a year. In its first five years it contributed £700m to the local economy.
