The business

Into Music are a pre loved musical instrument retailer specialising in drums and percussion. They source out stock from all over the UK and restore, repair and service everything in house before putting it up for sale. They aim to offer musicians with a reliable place to buy, trade and hire quality instruments. Into Music is run by Jake Harris who has been trading in drums and percussion instruments since 2016. Since this time he has built up a reliable customer base and exports all over the world to supply other music shops with quality pre-loved stock from the UK. More recently in 2019 Jake was awarded Young Entrepreneur Of The Year by The Prince’s Trust.

How it started

Jake Harris was just 18 years old studying at music college when he first had his business idea. As a student on a low income, he couldn’t afford to buy brand new music equipment so shopped on eBay to purchase affordable, used items.

This gave Jake the brainwave to create a business to source quality equipment from the marketplace and repair it before putting the items back up for sale at a profit. He spent his weekends during college trawling through car boot sales with his Grandad to find bargains to take home, repair and resell – bringing in profit while learning more about business and the reseller community.

What started as a hobby during his studies is now a truly successful family business, employing two additional members of staff, including his uncle.

Operating from his Grandparents’ extension, the business has one of the largest online inventory of pre-loved drum equipment on eBay and has huge plans for growth.

What the seller says...

"There has evidently been a massive increase in retailers turning to online selling. Since the first lockdown, the growth of our business has allowed us to develop new relationships with suppliers. We are now authorised dealers of some of the biggest brands, which has helped us to stand out in a competitive market and increase our exposure online. As a team, I feel like everything is running more smoothly and our success this year has enabled us to improve our whole service – from listing the products to getting them quickly delivered to our customers.

“The advice I would give to budding sellers is to make sure that you have your own way of standing out from competitors and have that one thing that makes you relatable. For example, making your listing photos consistent so customers recognize your listings, and they stand out from competitors on search pages.”
