Emmerdale celebrates 40 years

One of the nation’s favourite soaps is celebrating 40 years on our television screens on October 16th and audiences are in for a shock, as one well-loved character will meet his fate…

In the week-long celebration of Emmerdale’s 40th, there will be one live episode, which series producer Stuart Blackburn says “celebrates the key things that define the human experience” in one big night of drama – from two babies’ cradles to the deceased’s grave.

It is an October night in the Yorkshire village and the cries of two babies are set to bring joy to their loved ones. Two wedding celebrations are underway, one full of love and happiness, the other riddled with secrets and lies. Lurking beneath, wrath, betrayal and heartache will shatter the night with an untimely death.

"We want to avoid speculation as to which character dies, but suffice to say it will have major, far-reaching repercussions,” Blackmore said.

The gripping live show is to be directed by award-winning director Tony Prescott and shot entirely on location at the Emmerdale village.

"We have always known we were going to do a live [episode],” said Blackmore.

"We knew our 40th birthday was coming up and it’s a way of paying back the viewers. We like to think it’s a gift to our viewers and because Corrie and Eastenders have done it we just had to.”

The 40th celebrations also welcome a live-music festival on the Home Farm estate, with a line-up including Scouting for Girls and The Proclaimers.

"It’s fair to say life gets better and better and better at 40,” the Head of Continuing series Steve November said.
