Superman is in the Love Island Villa!
Challenges and Objectives
Superman was the launchpad for James Gunn’s new DC Universe and Warner Bros. Discovery’s biggest marketing priority of 2025. Armed with some of the most recognisable assets in entertainment - the crest, the costume and the iconic theme music - they had a bold and ambitious marketing strategy: to create “The Summer of Superman.” To achieve it, Superman couldn’t just be seen. It had to become part of the conversation. So Warner Bros. Discovery worked closely with ITV to find a disruptive content-led idea that would generate buzz, drive talkability and ultimately get audiences flying into cinemas.
Idea & Implementation
The fastest way to become the talk of the summer is to show up in the biggest cultural talking point of the summer. We coupled Superman up with the UK’s biggest
summer obsession: Love Island, delivering the show’s first-ever in-show branded challenge.
Targeting Strategy
Custom Set Build: The villa's challenge area was transformed into a blockbuster movie set featuring a towering Daily Planet structure, a dramatic Metropolis skyline, replica costumes, and a cameo by Krypto the dog.
Social Media Launch: Superman Director and DCU Co-CEO James Gunn teased the collaboration on his social media accounts, which was supported and amplified by the official Love Island channels.
Themed In-Show Text: Islanders received a customised text delivering the campaign hashtags (#CoupleSuperPowers, #LookUp) and prompting them to embrace their "inner Lois Lane and Clark Kent."
Branded Gameplay Challenge: The core in-show event where Islanders acted out a Superman-inspired love story, culminating in recreating Superman and Lois Lane’s iconic flying kiss. This secured over 20 minutes of dedicated editorial airtime.
Ad Break Takeovers: Official Superman film trailers were strategically placed in the commercial breaks surrounding the themed episode to remind viewers of the upcoming cinema release.
Pre-Show & Title Integrations: The movie integration began before the episode even started, featuring in the "First Look" preview and Iain Stirling’s opening title sequence.
Extended Franchise Takeover: The Superman branding and conversation spilled over into the show's entire ecosystem, including editorial social content, the Love Island: Morning After podcast and vodcast, Aftersun, and Unseen Bits.
