Katie's thoughts:
"Maybe it's because I grew up in North London that I've always been so very fond of this ad, but I don’t think that’s the reason. In the algorithmic world that we live in, where personalisation enables us to hold a mirror up to our target audience, it's all too easy to go through life seeing aspirational or deeply disappointing versions of ourselves. And when it comes to mass advertising we so often give up completely, creating characters so bland as to neither appeal, nor offend, anybody. So, what a delight to remember Maureen Lipman as the doting Jewish grandmother that, she says, catapulted her from 'jobbing actress' to 'Jewish actress'. A niche character that captured the nation's hearts, making her famous catchphrase a part of British culture (and one that I used when my daughter got her ‘ology’ to much eye rolling!). It wasn’t divisive or patronising, and it didn’t matter that the majority of the UK had probably never met someone Jewish, we laughed along with her because the acting and scripting meant we were as invested in her character as if she had been the main character of a TV show, a grandmother figure for the nation with all the idiosyncrasies that come with that!"
