Trevor's thoughts:

"In the 90s, there was a set of rules you had to follow in advertising. Back then, commercials had big budgets, were beautifully scripted and slickly produced.

Our Tango ad broke all the rules.

The brief was a gift because the client, who knew he couldn’t compete in a traditional way against his competitors' huge budgets, said we could do whatever we wanted, as long as we made Tango famous and scared the s*** out of Coca Cola. My creative partner, Al Young, and I were at one of the top agencies in town, and we knew people were queuing up for our jobs, so we were desperate to hold on to them. We knew we had to do something no one else was doing in order to stand out. Getting to an idea that can take on a life of its own in culture, like the Tango ad did, requires a rebellious streak. You also need the creative freedom to play around and be silly.

So, instead of following all the category tropes of - sip a drink and something amazing happens, we did the opposite. We dramatised the hit of orange in the Tango drink with a slap in the face.

I knew we were on to something when the ad aired, and I was heading home on the tube after a night out, and a group of kids were excitedly talking about it and Tango-ing each other in the face. That was happening so much that the ad with the slap was eventually banned, and we replaced it with a kiss instead.

The rest, as they say, is history."
