The National Lottery and ITV Launch I Am Team GB
On Saturday 27 August The National Lottery and ITV will be asking the nation to get out and get active by taking part in I Am Team GB, the UK’s biggest ever sports day.
To celebrate the support the nation gives them by playing The National Lottery, Team GB's returning Olympians will join famous faces from ITV at events across the UK. Over £80 million has been raised each year by National Lottery players to help fund elite athletes during the four-year build-up to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.
To become part of this amazing day out on the bank holiday weekend, the public can visit the I Am Team GB website www.iamteamgb.com from Thursday 14 July, where they can sign up to find out all about the exciting free sporting events and activities in their area. From hockey to handball and rowing to running, hundreds of different sporting activities will be available to try, whatever the level of fitness.
As well as thousands of local sports venues and clubs up and down the country opening their doors to the public, two of ITV’s most iconic shows will be doing the same thing and inviting people to join them on the 27 August. The famous cobbles of Coronation Street and the rolling hills and dales of Emmerdale will be open and welcoming members of the public to take part in a whole host of sporting activities.
The events will also be a homecoming for our lottery-funded Olympic athletes when they return from Rio, inspiring everyone, no matter what their level of fitness, to come together with Olympic heroes and famous faces from ITV in the biggest ever UK-wide sports day.
One of the events taking place across the UK will be hosted by Olympic and world champion Greg Rutherford, who retained his European long jump title last week.
Greg said: “You don’t have to be an Olympian to be part of Team GB. National Lottery players make a huge difference through the support they give athletes and on the August bank holiday weekend, there is another amazing chance to be part of it. There are going to be thousands of fun, free events across the country so make sure you sign up, get involved and be part of Team GB!”
To encourage people to get active, ITV will also be switching off their transmission for an hour across all channels to get the nation to get moving. At 9.30am on 27 August, the big switch off will see ITV’s seven channels come off air for an hour to encourage the great British public to get up and out and involved in sport at one of the many events happening across the country.
The event is taking place in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA), UK Sport and is supported by Join In.

When it comes to big, brave ideas that change people's behaviour it can't come much bigger than switching off the ITV network to get the nation out of their homes and doing something active. Thanks to this unique partnership between ITV and The National Lottery I think 27th August is going to be one of the great fun events of the year.
Simon Daglish, ITV’s Deputy Managing Director, Commercial
This is a major summer campaign for us. It puts ITV at the heart of the Olympic homecoming and means we can do a bit of good for Britain’s health and fitness at the same time. As a broadcaster we have a unique ability in being able to reach over 40 million people a week. This is a great example of how we can harness the influence of our brand on a national and local level to rally the nation and create change for good.
